Why Ramadan Is the Most Important Month for Islamic Finance
Ramadan is the month when most Muslims worldwide fulfil their annual zakat obligation. While zakat is technically due on each individual's personal anniversary date (the completion of a lunar year since their wealth first exceeded the nisab), the majority of Muslims choose to pay during Ramadan because of the multiplied rewards described in prophetic tradition. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described Ramadan as a month when "the reward of every obligatory act is multiplied seventy times, and the reward of every voluntary act is equal to an obligatory act in other months."
This concentration of zakat payments means that Ramadan is effectively the annual distribution season for Islamic charitable wealth. Global zakat collections during Ramadan are estimated to exceed $200 billion, making it one of the largest annual wealth transfers in human history. For Islamic charities, Ramadan accounts for 50 to 80 percent of their annual donations. Getting your zakat calculation right during this month is not just a personal obligation but a contribution to a global system of wealth redistribution.
Beyond zakat, Ramadan involves several other financial obligations and opportunities: zakat al-fitr (fitrana) must be paid before the Eid prayer, voluntary sadaqah is heavily encouraged, fidyah and kaffarah may be due for missed fasts, and Eid itself requires budgeting for gifts, food, and celebrations. Our Ramadan guides cover each of these topics in detail, with links to the relevant calculators so you can get exact figures for your situation.
